words cannot express my love for the look of cameron diaz at the golden globes this year. when i saw her i sort of gasped and was in love. everything is perfect to me... especially the hair. so save your pennies and skip your color appointment- cause come on, wouldn't you like to rock that look? one word of warning... if you let your color go like that, you have to make sure to make up for it in your makeup and clothes (as cameron did), otherwise you look like you live in a trailer. i'm just saying.

if you have thick/long hair, another thing i love is to put one biggish messy braid underneath when you are wearing your hair down. this is especially cute with a scarf/bandana headband. and even cuter if it is at all possible for you to be at the beach. :)

it's time i said a few words about pureology's nanoworks. this stuff is amazing. seriously. your hair feels deliciously soft when you use it, and the smell is the stuff of dreams. it's worth it's weight in gold, and that's around what it costs (give or take). but if you have a hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket, i recommend picking some up. you can read more about it here: http://pureology.com.

we have this book (look left) at my work, written by the doctor who injects the most botox of anyone in the world. i have been picking it up and reading through it lately and it is so good. it's not just about botox, it's like an encyclopedia for everything that you can put on / do to your skin. i thought i'd share two wonderful ideas out of it for you.

1. if your eyes need a little tlc, whether it be dark circles or puffiness, take two green tea bags, soak them in ice water, then apply them to your eyes for ten minutes every morning. you will thank me. not only does it help immediately with the appearance, but green tea is one of the best things you can put on your skin. it is loaded with anti-oxidants, which are what kill free radicals, which are what age your skin. excellent.

2. i have not tried this one yet but plan on it immediately. warm up some milk, and then grind some brown sugar into it. let it cool to room temp and then use on face as a scrub. not only does the sugar act as an exfoliant, but the lactic acid in the milk does as well. can't wait.

if anyone tries them, let me know what you think... and i'll do the same...

i feel good about myself / random thoughts

my sister kelly and i went to my old beauty school for pedis last saturday. i didn't end up getting one because they only had one chair available, so i just hung out while kelly got hers. this glimpse back into school gave me a brief surge of confidence that i really am good at what i do. you should have seen kelly's toes. what kind of an idiot would be finished when her toes looked like that. sorry, maybe idiot is a harsh word, but i feel strongly about it. don't think it's just because she's in school either... i did very good work even while i was in school. what is this girl even doing in beauty school if she has not previously shown a propensity for this line of work/creative talent. i remembered while i was there that this applies to 99.9% of the girls in beauty school. yikes. no wonder i've had so many bad haircuts. just because you can rat your hair until it is in a six inch high square off the top of your head, doesn't mean that you should do hair for a living. maybe i wouldn't have such a strong opinion about this if i was not constantly judged by my school owner/instructor, for not wearing enough makeup or for not "doing" my hair like that. a lot of good its doing them.
ps- did you hear that heath ledger is dead? weird.
pps- if anyone can provide me with / email me a really good picture of idaho hair, i will be much obliged and feature it on this blog as what not to do.

every six-eight weeks i head down to utah for a make-shift salon in my sister's house for clients in that area. i was there for three days this time and didn't sit down for more than five minutes, but it was so much fun! we forgot to take pictures of everyone, but we got a few that i'll share over the next few days. i always ask how they'd like me to style their hair and the beachy curls is 100% of the time requested. i supppose it's becoming my signature style.

to finish up talking about curly hair...i just have to tell you that my husband, bless his heart, has been begging me for a tight perm for a long long time. what can i say? he likes to be unique. i finally gave in:

tyler is the boss of some teenage skater kids who immediately requested perms after seeing him. tyler is quoted as saying "i'm a trend setter. get used to it." watch out. the perm's coming back. in all seriousness though, i have been working on a technique to give a body wave (yes, i just used the term body wave) that looks like sjp's hair, and i'm getting close to it's perfection. i just need some guinea pigs. anyone want a perm in 2007?

reader request: curly hair help

we are using sjp for a learning model today. her hair is as gorgeous and coveted as jennifer aniston's- and look! this wild mane is what she naturally has to work with. i know some people hate their curly hair- but really it's awesome. it gives the body you need to pull off any style. sjp has worn her hair long, medium, and short with every degree of straight or curliness; no matter what she does it looks great because of the texture and body that her curls give it. here's what you can do with your curls and how to pull it off:

look one: work with it! (the long curl) ok, so we know i am obsessed with beachy curls and long flowy hair. and the reason is this: i have wave in my hair, and my hair is thick and coarse. this is a look i can do to work with my body to make it pretty instead of crazy big. this look is easy easy for even the curliest of hair. it is done one of two ways. 1. if you have really tight curls you need to set it when it's wet. comb through and add a texturizing product. then take large sections and hand form them into curls and bobby pin them loosely to your scalp. blow dry hair like this and then take out pins. use your hands to lightly piece through and tossel, and then apply a gloss finish. this might take a couple times to perfect but it will change your life! 2. if you have just wavy unruly hair, blow dry it first in every direction without using a brush, then use an awesome curling iron (come back tomorrow to see which one i use) and curl from the top down away from your face in large sections. set with a flexible hairspray. (this is how i do my hair).

look two: short tossled curls. this cut is so awesome and easily maintained and is really only available to naturally curled ladies so rejoice! (how i wish i could look like meg ryan in city of angels sometimes!) anyway, the key here is the cut. it must be a very good one, and frankly, there are a lot of not very good hairdressers out there that cannot do this. come see me if you live close or really research to find a good one near you. it's layering and layering some more done just so (really, this is true of long or medium curls too. otherwise you have what we call a triangle). when the cut is done right all you need to do to style is run product through your hair, use your hands to shape the curls and blow dry for a few minutes (depends on the amount of curl you start with how quick this process will be).

three: the mediums and "growing it out lengths". so pretty and just require some combo of the short and long styling. just play around with it. you really won't go wrong with the bobby pinned big sections while it's wet.

four: straitening at any length. if you must. you are very lucky because your straight look will have the body and bounce that naturally straight girls go to great lengths to get. to retain some of the curl apply product and then use a round brush to blow out the hair in every direction. to go absolutely straight you're going to have to go to town with a straightener after a punishing blow dry. i just say go with the curls!

look five: this is where curly girls are the luckiest of all! up do's are beautiful when you have soft waves to be loosley falling out and surrounding your face. for days when you have no time at all throw your hair in a messy bun, pull out a few curls and you'll look like juliette!

work with what you've got. get a good stylist, good product and take an evening to play around with it (these styles take the tiniest bit of practice to perfect). soon you will be able to get these looks in five minutes every morning and feel like a million bucks.

how stunning do these two look? soft beachy unfussy curls are my favorite, my specialty, and my pick for my own hair. the secret is a really, really good curling iron. then curl from the top down (rather than rolling up, wrap the hair around the barrel) away from the face. gorgeous.

me and my brother kenny, two of the six specimens in my family who have hair as thick and coarse as a horse. all the siblings are now counting their lucky stars that i do hair because i know from the past how hard it is to find a hairdresser that gets how to cut a thick mane. you have to have it to really understand, and oh boy do i have it. i know just how much you have to HACK into it to give it shape. i gave kenny the "zack efron" - isn't he cute? they are a weird-brainwashed-wannabe royal family. but i love their look. copying katie's hair is all in the styling. that bob is just a short haircut with layers, and could look very mommy and run of the mill if parted down the center and flipped out, like a lot of women get stuck doing. the key is to blow dry in every direction, avoiding the "flip" and parting far off to the side for a sweeping look in the front. and of course, have a man that looks like tom cruise and a baby that looks like suri. that'll help too.
